Every human being has a great
Yet often unknown gift.
To care, to be compassionate,
To become present to the other,
To listen, to hear, and to receive.
If that gift would be set free,
And made available,
miracles could take place.
- Henri J.M. Nouwen
This week, we had the wonderful opportunity to celebrate and recognize the important role our nearly 40,000 SSM Health team members play in carrying out our Mission, Vision and Values. Together, we use our unique individual skills, experience, passion, and sense of purpose to fulfill our shared Mission in a profound way – which inspired our theme ‘My Purpose – Our Mission.’
In addition to our technical skills, each of us has also been given the capacity to be present to others. We have countless opportunities each day to share this gift – to care, to be compassionate and to become present to each other – to reveal the healing presence of God for those we serve. And when we share that healing presence, as Nouwen notes, miracles can take place.
Sometimes we don’t know how our presence may touch the life of another. Through a kind word, an act of service or just being attentive to the person before us, we can make a difference. Often, we walk with people during vulnerable times in their lives, when they need attention and encouragement. Our ability to share our gifts and be present, allows the healing presence of God to work through us in a way that makes our communities and the world a better place. We hope Health Care Week provided you time to ponder your own gifts and reflect on the difference you make in the lives of others.
