Helping children prepare for a trip to the doctor's office

by SSM Health

Whether it’s a routine checkup or something more serious, going to the doctor’s office can be an overwhelming experience for children. SSM Health Medical Group pediatrician Karen Rose, MD, provides tips to help to ease anxiety and create a good relationship.

“It’s important when you are taking your child to the doctor to walk through the things that are going to happen with them,” said Dr. Rose.

Talking to kids and giving them perspective on what could happen during their appointment is helpful in offering a better understanding and feeling more comfortable. When children know ahead of time what’s going to happen, and not happen, they can prepare themselves for what’s coming. They can think about it and get used to their feelings about it.

Another great tip is to use something visual to help kids understand what to expect at their appointment. One great option is to watch a cartoon whose character goes to the doctor. Watching their favorite character do this may help ease their uneasy feelings and understand what to expect. Reading a book about going to the doctor is also a great option.

As a pedestrian and parent, Dr. Rose knows the importance of the child and provider having a good relationship. It’s important to talk about the doctors, nurses, and staff kindly so your child hears that health professionals are “on your team” and it’s a safe place to be.

If your child has special needs or fears, it’s helpful to call the office ahead of time and let them know. Working together, we can help make the visit as comfortable as possible.

At SSM Health, we love taking care of our pediatric patients. “We want them to thrive in everything they do and live healthy, happy lives,” said Dr. Rose. Schedule an appointment with your pediatrician today.
