Fraud Awareness
Hackers and scammers engage in fraudulent activity to obtain your information, financial information, or steal an individual's identity. Unfortunately, scammers impersonate known and trusted organizations, such as SSM Health, to deceive individuals and conduct fraudulent activity.
SSM Health collaborates with law enforcement to identify and stop scammers from impersonating our brand and deceiving our patients, but not every scammer can be stopped before they begin stealing information. This article summarizes fraudulent activity SSM Health has seen and advises on actions you can take to protect yourself.
Financial Fraud
Scammers may impersonate SSM Health employees via email, phone call, or text message to obtain financial information. Scammers may claim to work with a billing department or government agencies and inquire about medical debt. Scammers may ask for:
- Credit card or billing information
- Social security number
- Insurance information
Please note, caller ID can easily be faked. We have identified some scammers impersonating the SSM Health name on their caller ID.
If you are unsure if a call, email, or message about billing information is legitimate, please contact SSM Health's billing department or log into your MyChart account.
How to keep yourself safe from scammers:
- Do not trust caller ID
- Always verify questionable calls or emails by contacting SSM Health via an official channel
- Enroll in MyChart for a secure way to view and pay medical bills
Recruitment Fraud
Some scammers will pose as SSM Health recruiters and make fake job offers. The scammers may request sensitive information, such as banking details. Learn more about recruitment fraud and what you can do if you're a victim.
Patient Portal Email Scams
Scammers may send you a fake email telling you that you have an important and unread message in your MyChart account. These fake emails will take you to a fake website that can:
- Steal your MyChart password
- Ask you for personal information
- Download malicious software.
Fake emails can be difficult to detect, as scammers will use official logos and brand images from the company they are impersonating.
Official MyChart emails will contain a link going to the website https://mychart.ssmhc.com
If you are ever unsure if an email from MyChart is legitimate, please login to MyChart directly by entering https://mychart.ssmhc.com in your web browsers address bar, or login to MyChart through the official mobile application.
