When to Consider a Sleep Study

Most nights, around 12 percent of children snore. Of that percentage, about one in four suffer from sleep apnea. The sleep lab at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital can help physicians detect sleep apnea and many other sleep disorders that affect children.

Removing large tonsils will be effective eighty percent of sleep-related breathing problems in children. A sleep study is recommended if your patient snores and has any of the following symptoms:

  • Adenoidal Facies
  • ADHD
  • Bedwetting (Nocturnal Enuresis) after the age of six
  • Behavioral issues
  • Cyanosis
  • Daytime sleepiness
  • Failure to thrive
  • Gasping
  • High arched palate
  • Hypertension
  • Morning headaches
  • Overweight
  • Pauses in breathing
  • Sleeping with neck hyperextended
  • Small Chin (Micrognathia/Retrognathia)
  • Tonsillar Hypertrophy
  • Underweight

A sleep study can also be helpful for patients who have had their tonsils removed, but are still suffering from lost sleep or for patients that do not snore but have excessive daytime sleepiness.
