Preparing lunches for school is a prime time for teaching nutrition

by SSM Health

Sending kids to school with tasty, healthy foods doesn’t have to be difficult. There are lots of wonderful options that can add variety and nutrition to kids’ diets.

“Selecting items out of each food group and challenging kids to try something new can help them to discover new favorites,” said SSM Health Wisconsin Regional Community Health Director Megan Timm.

One way that families can also build excitement about eating healthy is to spend time in the kitchen together.

Whether cooking a full meal or simply selecting some snacks, hands-on learning is very beneficial.

“Empowering kids to make good choices and to be part of the decision-making can really help to develop good habits,” Timm said. “Try to make grocery shopping fun and think outside the box.”

When running to the store, challenge yourself to only shop the perimeter.

“Many processed food items are located in the inner aisles,” Timm said.

Also remember that healthy meals should include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, protein and dairy.

Persistence is key when teaching kids to try new foods.

“Don’t give up if you have a picky eater,” Timm said. “Offering the same food multiple times, or preparing foods in different ways, can make a difference.”

To help with serving correct portions, you can use a special meal container like a Bento box, or use storage containers that come in standard measurement sizes.

“Portion control is something that many of us struggle with as adults, so learning good habits early is a good thing,” Timm said. “Just remember that each child is different, and you want to give them the right kind of nutritional fuel so they can learn and get the most out of each school day.”
