Andrew J. White, MD, has been named the Chair of Pediatrics at Saint Louis University School of Medicine and Pediatrician-in-Chief of SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital in St. Louis, where he will hold the Robert W. Wilmott Endowed Professorship.
Dr. White is a nationally recognized pediatric rheumatologist and immunologist who specializes in the care of children with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, juvenile dermatomyositis, immunodeficiencies, and other diseases. He is one of only a handful of pediatricians in the world recognized for the care of children with Hereditary Hemorrhagic Telangiectasia (HHT), also known as Osler-Weber-Rendu disease. HHT is an underrecognized genetic disorder that leads to abnormalities of the blood vessels.
At SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital, Dr. White will continue to provide care to children with rheumatologic disorders and is establishing a new pediatric HHT Center. He currently sits on the Global Research and Medical Advisory Board for the HHT Foundation International and is a member of its HHT Guidelines Expert Panel. In addition to the new HHT Center, his vision as Chair of Pediatrics includes expansion of the hospital’s well-known clinical programs, recruitment and retention of a diverse and robust faculty, and augmentation of interdisciplinary clinical research. He also is focused on establishing new collaborative community partnerships for the better of child health throughout the region.
Dr. White previously served as the James P. Keating Professor of Pediatrics and vice chair of education in the department of pediatrics at Washington University School of Medicine. He served as co-director of the HHT Center of Excellence at Washington University from 2006 to 2022 and was instrumental in putting pediatric HHT on the map worldwide. He also served as Wash U’s director of the Division of Pediatric Rheumatology for 13 years and was director of the Pediatric Residency Program at St. Louis Children’s Hospital since 2002. From 2000 to 2016 he also served as director of rheumatology at Shriner’s Hospital for Children in St. Louis.
A strong advocate of diagnostic skill development, Dr. White’s experiences in solving medical mysteries at the former Diagnostic Center in St. Louis Children’s Hospital led him to write a book entitled “Pediatric Diagnostic Medicine, A Collection of Cases,” which was published in late 2021. He also runs an independent medical mystery platform called “The Patient of the Week,” which showcases unusual patient presentations from across the country and sparks professional dialogue about these illnesses.
Dr. White earned his medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern in 1994 and completed a residency in pediatrics and a fellowship in pediatric rheumatology and immunology at Washington University School of Medicine before joining the faculty in 2000. During his tenure there, he received several awards for clinical teaching excellence and was the recipient of the University’s Samuel R. Goldstein Leadership Award and the Distinguished Clinician Award. He also was named the Phillip R. Dodge Scholar in Pediatrics.
We welcome Dr. White to SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital and Saint Louis University School of Medicine.
