Get answers from an infectious disease expert
The federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently approved updated COVID-19 vaccines for fall of 2024. They are designed to target the KP2 viral strain, which is a variation of the COVID-19 virus that caused an illness surge at the beginning of the year.
Now that a new version of the vaccine is approved, you might have some questions. SSM Health infectious disease expert Dr. Shephali Wulff answers common questions about what you can expect.
Will this be the only COVID-19 vaccine this fall? Or will there be additional vaccines approved later in the year that I should wait for?
This is likely to be the only COVID-19 vaccine update we will see in 2024. Similar to our annual flu vaccine process, experts believe we will see COVID vaccine updates on an annual basis.
How soon can I get the vaccine from SSM Health?
Now that the vaccine has approval from the FDA, SSM Health pharmacies and medical group locations expect to receive it in the next few weeks, and will begin to offer vaccinations around mid-September.
I’d like to get vaccinated as soon as possible. Should I just get the version that was approved in 2023, since it’s available right now?
At this point, since the vaccine is expected to arrive soon, it’s best to wait until the new vaccine is available.
“The updated vaccine will be the most effective way to boost immunity to protect from currently circulating COVID strains,” Dr. Wulff said.
I had COVID-19 this summer. Do I need to get the updated vaccine?
Yes. While it is reasonable to wait a few months, the protection from a recent infection usually starts to wane after about three months.
“Protection from recent COVID infections and previous vaccinations decline over time,” notes Dr. Wulff. “Annual vaccines are an important tool to remaining healthy through the winter months.”
I’m currently sick with COVID-19. Do I need to wait to get the new vaccine?
First, wait until you’re no longer infectious – which should be about a week (5 to 7 days) after the start of your symptoms – so that you don’t infect people around you by going out. Your body will have some immunity protection against currently circulating strains for a few months. Dr. Wulff recommends getting an updated vaccine within a few months of any recent COVID-19 infection.
Can I get the COVID-19 and flu vaccines at the same time?
Yes. COVID and flu vaccines are safe to receive at the same time. Talk with your primary care provider, or the person giving you the vaccines, if you have questions about managing any potential site soreness or other side effects.
Will I have to pay for the new COVID-19 vaccine?
COVID-19 vaccines are covered by commercial insurance, as well as Medicaid and Medicare. You can also receive updated vaccines at local vaccine fairs, or through your local health department.
“COVID vaccines remain safe and effective, and are the best way to protect against severe COVID-19 disease and death,” emphasizes Dr. Wulff. “If you have any questions, have a conversation with your provider about the vaccine.”
