Help in time of need

by SSM Health

For many people caring for their families, prioritizing personal health often falls to the bottom of the to-do list. Miranda Ends, a wife and mother of three, spent years managing the demands of living on a Wisconsin farmstead, caring for her family, and working — while living with chronic pelvic pain. Like many people who are accustomed to caring for others, Miranda put her own needs last.

Over time, however, the discomfort and symptoms began to become too much. "It wasn't until now that I realized how much pain I was actually in every day," she said.

After several gynecological treatments provided little long-term relief, Miranda worked closely with SSM Health OB-GYN Dr. John Van Weort to evaluate her options. Together, they discussed her medical history, symptoms, and goals before deciding that a partial hysterectomy was the right choice. "I logically knew the surgery was necessary and that it would help me feel better," she said. "But it was also the closing of a chapter — there was grief in knowing I would never have more children."

On the day of her surgery, Miranda faced an unexpected challenge: her children were sick, and her husband needed to stay home to care for them. As a result, she arrived at the hospital alone. What could have been an overwhelming situation became more manageable thanks to the compassion of her care team.

From the moment she checked in, SSM Health caregivers focused not only on her medical needs but also on providing reassurance and emotional support. "The first person I met that day said, 'We're going to take care of you. Don't worry,' and they did" Ends said. "They kept showing up for me in the best way possible when I needed it most," she said.

During her hospital stay, Miranda was touched by the kindness shown by caregivers at every stage of her recovery. Now that she is fully recovered and living without pain, she's ready to keep helping others. "I'm grateful and will continue to pay it forward," she said.
