What does the environment have to do with your health? A lot.
That’s why SSM Health has long embraced the responsibility of caring for creation — a commitment rooted in the mission of our Franciscan founders. That dedication is now being recognized on an international stage.
SSM Health has received the Gold Leaf Award from the International Society of Arboriculture, honoring our efforts to promote community health through environmental stewardship. The award reflects our ongoing work to restore natural spaces and improve well-being for the communities we serve.
This recognition comes thanks to a nomination by Forest ReLeaf of Missouri, a valued partner in our commitment to the environment. Together, we’ve planted hundreds of trees – and more than 3,000 seedlings – and rebuilt 372,766 square feet of new tree canopy in urban canopies across St. Louis, creating greener, healthier neighborhoods.
“Preservation of the earth is an often-overlooked component of health,” said Laura Kaiser, President and CEO of SSM Health. “Each of us can take small steps to improve the world around us. It’s a privilege to work alongside Forest ReLeaf. With collaboration and commitment, we can be inspired by what we accomplish together.”
Following in the footsteps of the Franciscan Sisters of Mary, we strive to reduce our carbon footprint, conserve energy, minimize medical waste, and embrace green building practices. We also invest in place-based initiatives that strengthen the communities where we serve as an anchor institution.
“SSM Health exemplifies what it means to connect community well-being with environmental stewardship,” said Meridith Perkins, Executive Director of Forest ReLeaf.
By caring for creation, we care for people — because a healthier planet means healthier lives.
