In what we describe as “compassionate care for creation,” SSM Health has long committed time and resources to conserving – and beautifying – our communities and the world around us. Throughout our regions, our team members can be seen picking up trash along our adopted roadsides, tending community gardens, aiding in city restoration efforts, and in the past five years alone, we’ve contributed to the planting of more than 13,000 trees.
But the environment is more than ours to preserve – it is a gift from God for us to enjoy and observe. Our planet’s beauty is an endless source of awe and wonder. And, when we are fully present, nature can be a perfect refuge for peaceful and mindful reflection.
Think about the last time you went for a walk – in your neighborhood, at the park, or on a hiking trail. Where was your focus? Did you listen to music or a podcast? Did you talk on the phone? Were you thinking about work or forming your to-do list? Often, our legs are moving while our attention is somewhere else. A walking meditation is designed to bring body and mind in sync. It is also a great alternative if you find it difficult to sit still with your eyes closed.
Tips for taking a mindful walk in nature
Before you Begin
Dress comfortably and leave your headphones behind. Take a few breaths before you begin walking and run a quick body scan. Notice how your body and mind feel. Is there tension anywhere? How does the ground feel under your feet? How’s your mood? What’s on your mind? Observe these sensations and feelings without judging them.
Start Walking
Walk naturally and set a slow pace initially so that you can focus more easily on the experience. Pay attention to the sensations you feel physically as your walk. Focus on one thing at a time. How does the ground feel under your feet as you move? Can you feel a breeze against your skin or ruffling your hair? Is there sunshine warming your skin or the top of your head? What sounds do you hear?
After Walking
When you’ve finished walking, stop for a moment to notice your breath again and do another quick scan of your body. Do you feel any different?

Don’t forget – this week’s prompt in our Year of Kindness Challenge is to “take a walk or bike ride on a trail you haven’t explored before.” Why not try to add some mindful meditation on your new trail!
