SSM Health’s disruptive business model is the subject of a case study by the American Hospital Association (AHA) in its new report, “Thriving in the New Health Care Economy: How Hospitals and Health Systems Can Pivot Their Operating Models for Sustainability.”
AHA dubbed SSM Health as one of the industry’s “Trailblazers,” noting that “traditional tactics employed by many hospitals and health systems are proving ineffective against disruptions in their markets.” Not so with SSM Health, the report says.
To thrive amid disruption, AHA says SSM Health pivoted to a new, customized business model “based loosely on Lean management principles for continuous quality improvement.” This has helped SSM Health deal with the challenge of serving patients in urban, suburban and rural settings.
“We chose to face these issues head-on by becoming more innovative and agile,” SSM Health President and CEO Laura Kaiser told AHA. “Operating as a unified system on efforts that can best be tackled with size, scale, talent and expertise is helping us to respond to the increasing challenges across our industry.”
