As a second-year medical student at the Oklahoma State University College of Osteopathic Medicine, Caleb Cochell recently completed a summer externship with SSM Health. This experience took Cochell into the heart of Oklahoma City, where he spent time at the SSM Health Medical Group, Family Medicine Center in Midtown.
From the moment Cochell arrived, he says he was welcomed with open arms. The family medicine team was incredibly supportive and the patients were gracious and eager to contribute to his learning. Cochell was able to observe a wide range of daily life as a provider in a primary care clinic, gaining insight into different work styles, patient demographics, and clinical approaches.
One of the most impactful takeaways from this experience for Cochell was the importance of accessibility and communication—not just with patients, but within the care team. Cochell saw firsthand how being approachable and responsive can significantly boost staff morale, which in turn enhances patient care. It may sound simple, but Cochell noticed that treating everyone—staff and patients alike—as people first is a principle that cannot be overstated.
“Everyone was extraordinarily welcoming,” said Cochell. “The patients were more than happy to oblige to help my education.”
Another key lesson was the value of effective communication with patients, especially when working through a translator. Learning how to interview and educate patients across language barriers was a powerful reminder of the importance of empathy, clarity, and cultural sensitivity in health care. Cochell explained that, above all else, he noticed a shared, unwavering commitment to helping patients and providing them with exceptional care. Cochell observed that every provider he shadowed demonstrated a deep sense of purpose and compassion. That common thread reminded Cochell why he chose a career in medicine in the first place.
“This experience with SSM Health Medical Group, Family Medicine Center was a great way for a medical student to learn,” said Cochell.
