Early detection saves lives – schedule your mammogram

Most women with breast cancer don't have a family history

by SSM Health

Did you know breast cancer affects one in eight women in the United States? Most women with breast cancer do not have a family history of the disease. Breast imaging gives us the opportunity to screen patients to find cancer early, oftentimes before they cause symptoms.

“Screening refers to performing exams on people who don’t have symptoms to allow detection of breast cancer at an early stage. We recommend annual screening mammograms for women age 40 and older,” Dr. Cheryl Herman, breast radiologist and breast health expert at SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital – St. Louis, said.

A mammogram is an X-ray that allows your health care team to look for changes in your breasts. This non-invasive exam can detect breast cancer early when it is easiest to treat. While a mammogram alone doesn’t diagnose cancer, the images can help your doctor determine if additional tests are needed.
