‘Family speaks to how I feel about my coworkers.’

Stoughton TeamWhen a serious illness arises, the kindness of others can often help make a major difference for recovery.

SSM Health Dean Medical Group - Stoughton caregiver Susan McGee says her coworkers have offered unparalleled support following her recent breast cancer diagnosis.

“Saying ‘family’ speaks to how I feel about my coworkers,” she said.

Susan has been an SSM Health Dean Medical Group caregiver for 25 years. She originally worked as a business services representative, and later moved to registration and scheduling.

“I have watched some of our patients come in for pediatrics appointments and now they’re coming in to see family medicine,” she said.

The breast cancer diagnosis was a shock for Susan, as she had no family history of the disease. She had surgery on May 16 and was on medical leave for more than two months.

On August 15, her first day back to work, Susan was surprised with a celebration from her team. Many happy tears were shed.

“I have learned so much through my journey, but the most important is realizing love and support from my husband, my immediate family, my work family, and my dear friends,” she said. “They kept me moving forward and I knew I was never alone.”

Susan says that although cancer recovery is always a work in progress, being able to return to her role has given a welcomed sense of normalcy. She also loves being back with her crew.

“Being with these incredible people who genuinely care about everyone who comes in and may be fighting their own battle is a gift,” she said.
