Overcoming post-vacation blues: Tips to keep the vacation vibe alive

by SSM Health

Roopa Shah, MDThe summer season and summer vacations are coming to an end. Whether you took a dream trip or had a simple weekend getaway, returning to your normal life and routine can be tough. The transition from holiday mode to everyday life can be jarring, often leading to what’s commonly known as the “post-vacation blues,” said Dr. Roopa Shah, SSM Health family medicine physician.

“Not to worry — this is completely normal and with a few mindful strategies, you can ease back into your routine while keeping that vacation vibe alive,” she said.

Tips to prevent post-vacation blues

  • Don’t leave a mess: Getting ready for a vacation can be hectic, but make sure to clean up your home before you leave so you don’t come back to a mess. It’ll make your return much more welcome.
  • Plan a free day: If you can, plan to have a free day before returning to your normal work or school routine. You’ll have time to relax, unpack and get settled before jumping back into your responsibilities.
  • Plan a return activity: Plan a fun activity like a movie or dinner with friends to occur shortly after you return. It will give you something to look forward to.

Tips to manage post-vacation blues

“Even with plans in place, getting back into the groove can be tough,” Dr. Shah said. “If you still find yourself struggling with the blues, there are ways to manage them after you return.”

  • Connect with family and friends: Share your experiences with friends and family. Talking about your trip and showing your photos can be a great way to relive the good times.
  • Organize, upload and share your vacation photos: “Don’t let those beautiful photos get lost on your camera,” Dr. Shah said. “Print them out to put into a scrapbook with other items from your trip. Write down your memories with each photo to bring back that happy feeling.”
  • Practice gratitude and mindfulness: This can be a powerful mood enhancer to reflect on and appreciate the life you’ve created. Practicing gratitude and mindfulness has been shown to reduce depression and stress and cultivate a sense of well-being.
  • Stay active: Exercise is a great way to boost mood and energy levels. It doesn’t have to be a lot. Even a morning jog or evening walk can provide a benefit.
