Breastfeeding is a beautiful and natural way to nourish and bond with your baby, but it can also come with some challenges. Whether this is your first baby or third, every breastfeeding journey is different. Leigh Platt, a board-certified lactation consultant at SSM Health Dean Medical Group, discusses the joys and challenges of breastfeeding, and provides some tips to help along the way.
The joys of breastfeeding
- Bonding with your baby: “One of the most rewarding aspects of breastfeeding is the close bond it creates between you and your baby,” Platt said. “The skin-to-skin contact and the act of nursing can strengthen your emotional connection.”
- Nutritional benefits: Breast milk contains important antibodies, hormones and enzymes that protect your baby. As a result, breastfed babies are at less risk for ear infections, allergies and asthma, diabetes and childhood obesity.
- Health benefits for mom: Women who breastfeed/lactate are at reduced risk for type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and certain cancers such as ovarian, uterine and breast cancers.
“While breastfeeding does provide many joys, it isn’t always as intuitive as many believe – it's a skill learned by both the mother and the baby,” Platt said. “Working with a lactation consultant can help with many of the challenges women may face.”
The challenges of breastfeeding
- Latching issues: Some babies may have trouble latching properly. This can cause discomfort and frustration for mom and baby. Seeking help from a lactation consultant can make a big difference.
- Milk supply concerns: “Over or under production can cause stress and anxiety for many women,” Platt said. “Lactation consultant work to empower moms to identify when baby is transferring milk from the breast and educate women on the importance of demand and supply.”
- Sore nipples: Women may experience some tender nipples initially, but breastfeeding should NOT be painful. If it is painful, it’s most likely a latch issue and working with a lactation consultant can be very beneficial.
Tips for a successful breastfeeding journey
- Educate yourself: “You can start your breastfeeding journey even before your baby is born,” Platt said. “Reach out to a lactation consultant, take a free breastfeeding class or read up on the topic. Knowledge is empowering.” Seek support: If you are struggling, don’t do it alone, and sooner is always better. Reach out to lactation consultants, breastfeeding support groups or your medical provider. Their advice and encouragement can be invaluable, and they can connect you with resources. Stay hydrated and nourished: Drinking plenty of water and eating a balanced diet will support your milk production and overall health.
