In the challenging environment of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), where families often face difficult goodbyes, one nurse is making a lasting impact through a simple yet deeply meaningful act of compassion.
Emalee Hall, an RN in the 3 North ICU at SSM Health Saint Louis University Hospital, started a heartfelt initiative called “Heart Beat in a Bottle”—a project designed to bring comfort to grieving families by preserving a special piece of their loved one’s memory.
Understanding the emotional toll families experience as patients transition to hospice or comfort care, Hall wanted to find a way to help bring closure for loved ones and offer support beyond medical care. She had come across the idea while in nursing school and thought it was the perfect concept to bring to SSM Health St. Louis University Hospital. The idea was to create a keepsake that families could cherish forever—a printed EKG strip of their loved one’s heartbeat, carefully placed inside a small glass bottle. Attached to each keepsake is a note that reads:
“So, when tomorrow starts without me, don’t think we’re far apart. For every time you think of me, I’m right here in your heart.”
What started as a small effort within the 3 North ICU has now spread to other ICUs, as Hall has worked to provide other units with the resources needed to offer these keepsakes to families. Her dedication to spreading the project ensures that more patients and their loved ones can experience this meaningful gesture, no matter where they are in the hospital.
“It’s heartbreaking to watch families say goodbye and there are no words that can really ease the pain of losing a loved one,” Hall said. “So, I wanted to give them something personal, something that would remind them that their loved one’s heartbeat will always be with them.”
The response from families has been overwhelmingly positive. Many have expressed deep gratitude for the keepsakes, which provide a lasting reminder of their loved one’s presence. For those facing loss, having a physical representation of their loved one’s heartbeat offers a sense of comfort and connection during an incredibly difficult time.
Hall’s compassion and commitment to going above and beyond for patients and their families truly exemplify the mission of SSM Health. By taking the initiative to create and expand “Heart Beat in a Bottle,” she is not only providing a treasured memento but also offering a profound reminder that, even in loss, love remains ever-present.
