Top foods for prostate health

by SSM Health

Most men will experience some type of prostate problem during their lifetime, and except for skin cancer, prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer found in men. It’s estimated that nearly 300,000 men in the United States were diagnosed with prostate cancer last year alone.

The good news is that most prostate cancer is detected early, before it has a chance to spread. At times, patients diagnosed with a slow-growing cancer that’s found very early are able to undergo a period of active surveillance of the cancer, with the goal of delaying treatment for as long as possible, until medically necessary.

If you’re currently engaged in active surveillance, have an elevated risk of prostate cancer, or simply suffer from prostate problems, consuming foods that support prostate health is an excellent idea.

Research shows that diets rich in antioxidants and healthy fats can help protect your prostate. Foods to include on a regular basis are:

Salmon and other cold-water fish

The fatty fish found in cold water (salmon, herring, trout, sardines) contain omega-3 fatty acids which help prevent and reduce inflammation in the body in general and have been linked to a lower risk of prostate cancer mortality.

Broccoli and cruciferous vegetables

Studies suggest there’s a connection between eating vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, Brussel sprouts and cabbage, and a lower prostate cancer risk. These vegetables contain a chemical called sulforaphane, which is thought to target and kill cancer cells in the prostate.

Berries

Antioxidant-rich strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, and blackberries help to remove free-radicals, the toxic biproducts of metabolism, from the body. Those can cause damage and disease to the prostate and other organs over time.

Nuts and legumes

Legumes include foods like beans, peanuts, and lentils that contain plant compounds called phytoestrogens, which have antioxidant properties that may help suppress tumor growth. Nuts and legumes are also rich in zinc which is believed beneficial to prostate health.

Foods to consider limiting

While choosing foods to promote prostate health and prevent cancer, you can also attempt to limit those that may undermine your efforts. Eating too much red and processed meats may increase inflammation throughout the body, potentially fueling prostate growth. Consuming dairy products, especially those made with whole milk, is linked to an increased risk of prostate cancer. Studies also indicate that excessive alcohol use, considered more than two drinks per day, may put men at a higher risk of developing prostate cancer as well.
