Quality Improvement & Patient Safety (QIPS) Curriculum

Goals and Objectives:

Our Internal Medicine Residency Program integrates the fundamentals of QIPS training into the residency curriculum. Through the QIPS curriculum, our residents are trained to establish a culture of safety and continuous improvement at their work place. Our aim is to guide our trainees to become exceptional physicians who can provide safe, timely, effective, efficient, equitable, and patient centered care.

Quality improvement (QI) consists of systematic and continuous actions that lead to measurable improvement in health care services and the health status of targeted patient groups.

Inpatient and Outpatient QI projects are an expected and fun aspect of residency training and a part of our clinical research curriculum. Each resident is encouraged to pursue early involvement in a new or existing QI project.

In addition to presenting at the SLU research and poster symposium in the Spring, many of our QI projects in the internal medicine clinic have turned into posters that have won first place at the Annual ACP conference. Not only do these projects challenge you, more importantly they should be sustainable and ultimately lead to continuous improvement in the quality of care for our patients!
