About the Ministry

St. Mary’s Hospital – St. Louis is an approximately 500-bed community teaching hospital serving patients from across the St. Louis metropolitan area. We have several medical residency programs including the SSM Health St. Mary's - St. Louis Internal Medicine Residency, Saint Louis University School of Medicine Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency, and Saint Louis University Family Medicine Residency. We have a broad range of services including cardiology, neurology, orthopedics, high-risk obstetrics, Level 3 NICU, surgical and medical intensive care units, and psychiatry. Pharmacists practice throughout the hospital including ER, all acute inpatient areas, and outpatient clinics.

Residency Overview

Established in 2001, this 12-month, ASHP-accredited program is designed to develop residents’ clinical knowledge through exposure to a variety of practice settings. Participating residents will receive thorough training and gain valuable skills applicable for their future careers. This residency program focuses on developing the resident's clinical knowledge through exposure to a variety of practice settings. Required clinical rotations include: orientation, internal medicine, critical care, cardiology, surgery precepting, management, and ambulatory care experiences. There are a variety of elective rotations which include, but are not limited to: advance experiences in any of the core rotations, academia, emergency medicine, infectious diseases, neonatal intensive care, and obstetrics. The resident will also gain exposure to Pyxis technology, committee initiatives and gain expertise in educating patients, health care professionals, and the community on drug related topics. The program includes participation in a formal teaching certificate program.

Four PGY1 residency positions are available each year. We take the time to ensure the program corresponds with our residents’ specific needs and interests.
