Common questions residents may have about our program:
The program is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). On February 25, 2025, we received our most recent accreditation letter from the ACGME. The ACGME is the accrediting organization for all allopathic residencies in the United States, and we are honored and excited to receive such a strong affirmation of our training program.
We received osteopathic recognition on July 1, 2017 and continued recognition on January 23, 2024. We strive to provide the highest quality education for all of our residents, both allopathic and osteopathic. It is gratifying to know that the ACGME Review Committees that oversee our training program have been impressed with the highest standards met by our hospital leadership, faculty, and residents and have granted us the maximum accreditation allowed.
At the end of the 1980s, the leadership of St. Anthony Hospital realized that tremendous changes were about to take place in the delivery of health care in Oklahoma and throughout the nation. Among these changes would be a progressively increasing reliance on primary care physicians to provide the basic health care needs of patients across our country. Furthermore, as with most hospitals across the country, the bottom line margin of the hospital was progressively shrinking as Medicare and other third party payers began to reimburse hospitals less for care they provided to patients. The leadership of the hospital desired to revitalize its once strong commitment to post-graduate resident education. In years past, the hospital had been very active in educating residents and had sponsored residency programs in a variety of specialties.
Prompted by these three goals, St. Anthony Hospital decided to start a family practice residency. In 1989, the hospital charged Dr. Tom Coniglione, the Vice President of Medical Affairs, with the job of finding a family physician qualified and willing to develop a family practice residency program and serve as its first program director. He recruited Drs. Rick Boothe and Terry Burge from Bartlesville, OK as the first faculty for the future residency program. Within six months, they had recruited Dr. Cheyn Onarecker who started with the program in July of 1991. Later in the summer of 1991, the program’s first family medicine center was opened at 10th and Shartel. Also in January of 1992, the ACGME granted the program its first provisional accreditation. On July 1, 1992, the program accepted its first residents. On June 30, 1994, Dr. David Jayne became the first graduate of St. Anthony Family Medicine Residency.
We have rotations for medical students. We do not have opportunities after medical school graduation.
SSM Health St. Anthony Hospital - Oklahoma City sponsors four residencies:
- The Family Medicine Residency at SSM Health St. Anthony Hospital - Oklahoma City
- Obstetrics & Gynecology Residency at SSM Health St. Anthony Hospital - Oklahoma City
- Transitional Year Residency at SSM Health St. Anthony Hospital - Oklahoma City
Directly across the street from SSM Health St. Anthony Hospital - Oklahoma City.
Residents on the inpatient services typically work about 60-65 hours. The average on the other rotations is between 40-50 hours.
We use a float system to cover the majority of nighttime patient care. First year residents will have 4 night float weeks; second and third year residents will have 3 night float weeks. A float week is from Sunday night to Thursday night. Residents will rotate call on the weekends. So residents typically do not have to miss rotation time for post call recovery.
Residents use EPIC in both the outpatient clinic and inpatient at SSM Health St. Anthony.
The Oklahoma Children’s Hospital OU Health also is on EPIC.
Residents will start orientation about 10 days prior to July 1st. Residents obtaining visas need to plan to be in Oklahoma City 1 month prior to the start of residency.
Residents with full medical license, no visa restrictions and in good standing are eligible to moonlight. International medical graduates obtain a full medical license at the beginning of their third year of training. We have opportunities to moonlight in the hospital on weekends.
We design our rotation schedule around the residents’ request for vacation. Residents have one, two and three elective blocks for each respective year of training. We work with residents to achieve their practice goals.
