Resident wellness is a strength of our program.
Residency is hard, but we want to support resident as they are in this period of intense growth. Our wellness curriculum includes monthly check-ins, activities to encourage teamwork, and policies to balance the time requirements with demands of life.
Check-Ins
We modified tools from the military for the stress continuum and developed our color check-in system. Several times a month we have scheduled check-ins. Depending on an individual’s color, interventions are recommended.
Activities
Residents have a session in didactics to focus on wellness as well as just relax. Balint group meets once a month to discuss the patient doctor relationship. In addition we have quarterly team building activities for the whole residency team.
Wellness policies for our residents:
- We monitor duty hours closely and we abide the requirements.
- We have eliminated almost all 24 hour calls – Friday night is the only 24 hour call in the system.
- Residents receive a wellness half day per rotation to attend to items like doctors and dentist appointments, car repairs, sleep, laundry, etc.
- Residents have access to free anonymous counseling and other coaching like a nutritionist. If needed, residents can get an expedited appointment for psychiatry.
- We design our rotation schedule around the residents’ vacation preferences. In addition, residents are allowed to take a late vacation day depending on the rotation and call.
