At SSM Health, our goal is to reduce risk, decrease recovery time and achieve excellent results. Minimally invasive procedures are accomplished through a smaller incision in the skin, which means less scarring, less risk, less pain and faster recovery.

What is robotic-assisted surgery?

Robotic-assisted surgery is a broad term to describe a number of surgical procedures that are typically minimally invasive. Highly trained physicians and their teams incorporate state-of-the-art smart medical technology as one of many tools to assist them in all or part of a procedure.

What robotic-assisted care does SSM Health offer?

We are passionate about bringing leading-edge solutions to our patients and are adding to our offerings regularly. A few of our areas of focus in robotic-assisted procedures include but are not limited to:

da Vinci Robotic Surgery

SSM Health Monroe Hospital offers both single-site general and gynecology surgery with da Vinci robotic surgical system. That means in some surgical cases only one small, single incision site is needed to perform the operation. To the patient that means less pain and faster recovery.

Mako® Robotic-Arm Assisted Surgery System

At SSM Health Monroe Hospital, the Mako® Robotic-Arm Assisted Surgery System has transformed the way knee and hip replacement surgeries are performed.

What is single port robotic-assisted surgery?

Single Port Robotic-Assisted Surgery is a leading-edge technology available to all Oklahomans only at SSM Health St. Anthony Hospital in Oklahoma City. This methodology enables our surgeons to focus with precision never before possible, minimizing downtime, recovery and some major side effects. Very importantly, Single Port Robotic-Assisted Surgery is a revolutionary offering for many types of patients with complex conditions, including cancer and those who require reconstruction or who have had multiple surgeries in the past.

Because Single Port technology is so targeted, patients who may not be candidates for other types of surgery may have the option of this type of surgical solution. Talk with your provider or ask for a referral to learn if Single Port Robotic-Assisted Surgery may be right for you.

Weight Management Services offers the da Vinci system for robotic-assisted gastric surgery. This allows your surgeon to perform a minimally invasive sleeve gastrectomy or gastric bypass. The da Vinci system features small, nimble instruments and a more magnified view. It results in less pain, fewer complications, and a quicker recovery than other options.

Robotic-assisted procedures can have many benefits in comparison to traditional surgery options, including but not limited to:

  • Quicker recovery
  • Less down time
  • Smaller incisions
  • Significantly shorter hospital stays (including many outpatient options)

All of these factors often lead to a more comfortable, less painful recovery.

Many patients who have been referred for surgical solutions may be candidates for robotic-assisted surgeries, including those who may be candidates for laparoscopic procedures or those who may have experienced certain challenges with more traditional surgical methods in the past. Talk with your provider about what options may be best for your unique needs.

Robotic-assisted surgeries are the future, and at SSM Health, the future is now. Our surgeons and our facilities are among the leaders in these technologies, helping our patients get back to doing what they love sooner and safer than ever before.

What is thoracic surgery?

Thoracic surgery is the umbrella term for any surgery on the non-beating organs in the chest cavity. SSM Health thoracic surgeons use minimally-invasive surgical techniques whenever possible. These minimally-invasive approaches allow our surgeons to operate through small incisions that are just one to two inches long. For you, this means less time in the hospital, less scarring, less pain and a faster recovery after the procedure.

What is video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS)?

Video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) involves the insertion of a long, thin camera, called a thoracoscope, through a small incision allowing your surgeon to view and examine your chest cavity in greater detail.

Depending on your condition or the treatment you need, minimally-invasive thoracic surgery may not be an option. Our surgical teams will perform a thorough evaluation of your overall health condition to determine the most appropriate treatment approach for you.

Do thoracic surgeons perform robotic-assisted surgery?

Like VATS, the da Vinci system gives your surgeon access inside the chest cavity through tiny incisions. This surgical system allows for more precise movements and control and improves visualization of the lung's anatomy with its 3D technology. Our thoracic surgical team will commonly use robotic-assisted surgery to treat diseases such as lung cancer, achalasia, GERD, thymoma, myasthenia gravis and paraesophageal hernias.
