Ensuring Access to Healthy Foods

In August 2023, SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital - Jefferson City partnered with Catholic Charities of Central and Northern Missouri to meet the needs of the community through the Hope and Healing food bag program. Hospital patients are screened for food insecurity and other social needs during the admission process, and the ministry’s case management and social work team connects patients-in-need to the program during discharge.

Patients who screen positive for food insecurity are discharged with a reusable, insulated bag that includes two full days of meals including breakfasts, lunches, dinners, snacks, and beverages. They can choose either gluten-free or regular food. The patient also receives information about Catholic Charities’ support of health and nutritional services.

SSM Health donated $50,000 for the inaugural program that provided emergency food to 29 patients with a total of 70 family members in 2023 and will continue through August 2024. In November 2023, the program expanded to serve patients at the SSM Health Medical Group Pediatrics Clinic in Jefferson City. Plans are underway to expand it to additional care sites.
