Annual Report for Greater St. Louis Metropolitan Area

Since SSM Health’s founding sisters began their ministry in St. Louis with just $5 among them more than 150 years ago, it has grown into one of the largest integrated delivery systems in the nation. In the St. Louis region in 2023, SSM Health operated eight hospitals, including one academic medical center; one pediatric academic medical center; over 100 multi-specialty physician clinic locations; numerous outpatient locations; nine urgent care centers; four Express Clinic locations, one behavioral health urgent care center; and over 60 rehabilitation clinics and one free-standing rehabilitation hospital in partnership with Select Medical (a U.S.- based company specializing in rehabilitation and occupational health).

Improving the health and lives of those we serve has always been at the forefront of the work we do, and in the St. Louis region, SSM Health’s efforts concentrate on the most pressing health needs of our communities, including substance use disorder, access to maternal health services, and chronic disease management (diabetes, heart disease, obesity).

SSM Health provided $195,233,078 in St. Louis community benefit for 2023.

Supporting Patients Affected by Food Insecurity

In 2023, SSM Health partnered with the St. Louis Area Foodbank to launch an expanded Bread Basket region-wide food insecurity program. Using donor support from the SSM Health Foundation, the Bread Basket program works to identify and assist patients experiencing food insecurity. Upon discharge, they are provided with two days of nonperishable food for their household, a direct referral to the community resource team at the St. Louis Area Foodbank, and support and navigation to food-related services for three months.

This innovative partnership with the St. Louis Area Foodbank not only assists with an immediate need by providing nutritious food at discharge, but also provides long-term connections to resources through food distribution events.

In 2023, SSM Health hosted 18 community drive-through food distribution events in the St. Louis region, serving 2,600 households that included more than 9,000 individuals. Eighteen community outreach events are planned in 2024.
