The CPE program at SSM Health Saint Louis University Hospital is accredited for Level I/Level II and supervisory education by the Association for Clinical and Pastoral Education (ACPE) which is the only CPE organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

The CPE Learning Process consists of:

  • Practice of Ministry in the role of pastoral care giver in a hospital setting.
  • Supervised Learning - Students take part in supervised group session and meet individually with a CPE supervisor.
  • Group Life - In a diverse peer group, students learn to give and receive critique in a pastorally and culturally sensitive way.
  • Recorded Case Studies - Students submit written records of ministry encounters.

This ACPE CPE center/program guarantees to its students the rights to inspect and review education records, to seek to amend them, to retain specified control over release of record information, and to file a complaint against the program for alleged violations of the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) rights. Staff Education

The Pastoral Care staff offers educational programs for nurses, medical residents, and clinical staff, as well as non-clinical staff. Programs focus on issues of grief; end-of-life issues; respect and dignity; ethics; religious diversity, spiritual distress, etc.

Field Education for Theology Students

The Pastoral Care department collaborates with seminaries and schools of theology to offer field education experiences for students. These learning opportunities include patients' visitation, supervision and evaluation.

Permanent Diaconate Formation Ministry Practicum

The Pastoral Care department offers a ministry experience for the aspirants to the Permanent Diaconate of the Catholic Archdiocese of St. Louis. This program includes patients' visitation, group reflection, supervision and evaluation.

Education for SLU Health Sciences Students

The Pastoral Care staff offer opportunities for medical students, nursing students and allied health students to shadow chaplains and reflect on their experiences. Pastoral Care staff are available for classes and presentations on topics related to spirituality and medicine.
